TMI?
There is still a healthy dose of skepticism among many businesses as to whether social media is really beneficial to their organizations or just a fleeting fad. I think most business people would agree that Twittering about what you ate for breakfast or checking Facebook to find a message from an old high school classmate is not very productive. In fact there have been several articles in the media about how social media can be a tremendous productivity killer for many businesses if their staff is Twittering when they should be working.
However a STRATEGIC social media program can be very beneficial to businesses of all sizes. Many companies forget that social media is just another marketing tool and to be effective it must be implemented very strategically. There are a few very successful case histories of companies using social media to drive awareness and sales – have you seen the Diet Coke/Mentos video? Coke went from initially suing the originators to later dropping the law suit and creating Diet Coke/Mentos kits. Mentos sales increased 15% from the video which has been viewed by 10 million people.
I’d be interested in hearing about any success stories you can share. I’d be happy to share some of our Social Media success stories as well. We are developing strategic social media programs for several of our clients in various industries.
